Silicon Perspective Corporation Ports Tools to Linux

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 2001--Silicon Perspective Corporation® (SPC), the leading supplier of IC design tools for silicon virtual prototypes, announced that it has ported its First Encounter(TM) full-chip design suite to the popular Linux operating system because of strong demand from its customers.

``Our customers, who are dealing with the most complex multi-million gate chip designs, see Linux as an ideal design and development platform for two main reasons: they can get more computing power for their dollars and it is very easy to use because it looks just like UNIX,'' stated Michel Courtoy, SPC's vice president of marketing. ``We expect the adoption of Linux to grow quickly based on the feedback from our customers.''

SPC's First Encounter is the industry's only tool suite that lets designers evaluate a multi-million gate IC as an entire chip all at once instead of a block at a time. By using First Encounter to create a full-chip silicon virtual prototype, designers can get early estimates of timing, die area and power consumption. As the design work progresses, these estimates can be updated daily if required, so designers can quickly identify problem areas in their circuits.

The adoption of the Linux platform for IC layout tools has trailed behind the front-end design tools because of concerns about the memory limitation and stability of Linux. However First Encounter's super lightweight architecture enables it to run the multi-million gate system-on-chip designs within these memory constraints. Also Linux has been the development platform used at SPC since the inception of the company, so our implementation is very stable.

SPC's First Encounter is available now for Red Hat Linux 6.2. First Encounter Linux pricing starts at $125,000 for a 12-month license, the same price as on UNIX workstations.
